Traveling to Lisbon in summer

Costa da Caparica ( ca 10 km von Lissabon)
Costa da Caparica ( ca 10 km von Lissabon)

High season (June, July, August)

Summers are very hot and daytime temperatures rise up to 35°CC. Peak tourist season runs from June to the end of August, and during this time there is a lively atmosphere throughout the city, especially at the main tourist attractions. In summer, especially in August, it gets hot in Lisbon, but not unbearable because you can always find a place in the shade to rest and enjoy. The proximity to the Atlantic and the evening breeze cause the temperatures to drop again at the end of the day. Summer thunderstorms, which are common in Germany, are almost non-existent here. Our tip for the summer time: There are fantastic beaches near Lisbon and opportunities for an active holiday close to nature. Summer is the ideal season to combine visiting the city's attractions with enjoying the beach. BUT: One problem with visiting Lisbon in the summer is that there is a lot of demand for accommodation and flights. That drives up prices. Therefore, be sure to plan and book well in advance. In August, many city residents go on summer vacation, the usual traffic jams, especially during rush hour, ease and the city becomes more relaxed (apart from the tourist hot spots)

Lisbon in low season (December, January, February)

The winter months in Lisbon can be humid and cold, with an average daytime temperature of 15°C, but at night temperatures often drop to as low as 8°C. If you visit in winter, bring warm clothing. The changeable weather pattern lasts until April, the winter weather has the same number of sunny days as rainy days, but the weather is unpredictable. One week can be sunny and pleasant while the next week can be wet and cold.

Travelers should be well prepared for the "damp cold" during this time. This means that having a small electric heater in your luggage can be very useful in an emergency. Especially with the poor heating and insulation in Portuguese houses, possibly also in holiday apartments.

For first-time visitors, a visit during these rainy and humid months is not recommended. It would be a shame to only have a rainy impression of Lisbon. For the traveler who already knows Lisbon, this travel time offers attractive opportunities to view some destinations in peace and quiet. Regardless of the weather, the good food and atmosphere in Lisbon is always worth a visit. The prices for flights and accommodation are very affordable during this time and represent excellent value for money compared to other city breaks in Europe.

Spring in Lisbon (March, April, May)

The rains become less frequent and rarely last longer than an hour. Of course, it is always a relief for tourists from countries like Germany, Austria or Switzerland to travel towards spring and summer after the long winter months. A day in the warm sun in a T-shirt or shirtless on the beach can make you accept a rainy day. You have to accept the change in weather and "maybe bad luck". It's worth a visit.
