Touring through Madeira

What are some of the best routes and must-see attractions to plan an enriching car journey through Madeira?

Exploring Madeira by car is an excellent way to discover the island's diverse beauty.

Here are some of the best routes and must-see attractions you shouldn't miss on your journey:

1. Encumeada via the ER228

Start your journey in Funchal and drive through Ribeira Brava to the impressive mountain road ER228, which leads through the Encumeada Valley. This route offers breathtaking views as it winds through the island's mountainous landscape. Originally the main route from the south to the north coast, it is now less frequented due to a faster tunnel route. My tip: Take the old mountain road on the way there and use the tunnel on the way back to save time.

Distance: Approximately 30 kilometers from Funchal to Encumeada.

2.  Paul da Serra Plateau via the ER110

Another highlight is the drive to the Paul da Serra plateau, featuring Madeira's longest straight road. From here, enjoy stunning panoramic views and make stops to admire the unique flora and fauna of the Laurissilva forest. Consider taking a hike along the famous Levada 25 Fontes or Levada do Risco trails.

Distance: Approximately 50 kilometers from Funchal via Ribeira Brava to Encumeada and Paul da Serra.

3. Pico do Areeiro and Ribeiro Frio

From Funchal, a scenic 20-kilometer ascent brings you to Madeira's third-highest peak, Pico do Areeiro (1,818 meters). The summit offers spectacular views, but be sure to check the weather forecast for clear skies. Nearby, the forest park at Ribeiro Frio and the aquaculture station, where rainbow trout are bred, are worth visiting.

Distance: Approximately 30 kilometers from Funchal to Pico do Areeiro and Ribeiro Frio.

4. North Coast via the ER101

One of Madeira's most spectacular drives is along the north coast via the ER101. This road runs between the ocean and the lush green mountains. The steep cliffs feature picturesque waterfalls cascading into the sea, creating a stunning backdrop. While parts of the original road are closed due to rockfall hazards, short stretches are still accessible, allowing you to experience its adventurous nature.

Distance: Approximately 70 kilometers from Machico through Santana, Ponta Delgada, Seixal to Porto Moniz.
